Here’s a little island-friendly trivia to sip on with your morning latte: the modern energy drink was born in Thailand. Before Red Bull took over nightclubs, Formula 1 cars, and everyone’s finals week, it existed here as Krating Daeng — a tiny, non-fizzy bottle made for truck drivers and farmers who needed to stay awake long before Zoom calls existed.

On the island, it’s still a go-to for construction workers starting before sunrise, and anyone who needs steady energy in the tropical heat. You’ll often see it alongside another local favourite, M-150, just as iconic and just as caffeinated.

The global leap came in the 1980s when an Austrian businessman landed in Bangkok, knocked back a Krating Daeng to beat jet lag, and had a light-bulb moment. Together with its Thai creator, the formula was tweaked, bubbles were added, and Red Bull was launched in Europe. The rest is caffeinated history.
