MAJOR STORIES

🎓 Thailand’s 2026 Education Budget Approved

MPs signed off on a 355 billion baht education budget.
But critics say the money won’t fix deeper issues.

Highlights:

  • 61% goes to salaries, leaving little for teachers and classrooms.

  • 1.85B baht set aside for basic learning tools, but only 150M for teacher support.

  • Big chunk funds the One-District-One-School program, raising fears smaller schools get ignored.

  • Opposition warns Thai education standards could fall even further.

🚧 Phuket Pushes for Special Status

Phuket wants special administrative status to fix long-running infrastructure and environmental issues.

Key moves:

  • Water shortages: plan to buy water from old mining pits + pipeline from Surat Thani’s Ratchaprapha Dam.

  • Waste: new incinerator (1,200 tonnes/day) expected next year.

  • Roads: Patong Tunnel on track for 2030.

  • Old Town: traffic, heritage, and tourism upgrades.

  • Other projects: cable relocation, new night markets, local tourism tie-ins.

🛵 Phuket Rental Bike Brawl Clarified

Phuket’s Kathu District Chief set the record straight on a viral fight in Patong.

What really happened:

  • Incident started over a Honda X-ADV 750cc rental crash.

  • Shop owner asked for 50,000 baht in damages, foreigner countered with 10,000.

  • Argument turned physical.

  • 6 foreigners involved, not 20 as first reported.

  • Both sides have filed complaints with Patong Police.

Officials promise fair treatment for everyone.

OUT & ABOUT

Weekend Mini Escapes: Kathu

Relax in the lush garden setting of Simply ’ism Café after a hike to Kathu Waterfall.

Got a great idea this week for anyone within driving distance of Kathu.
If you like a soft hike and some amazing food. Try this combo out.
Hit a morning walk to the Kathu Waterfall

Then drop in at Simply ’ism Café for something to eat on the way out. If you want to kill more time there is an oldschool herbal sauna right behind it. Where you can steam and chill out in the sun and pool for hours.

It’s the perfect little day plan — hike, eat, and unwind, all without leaving Kathu.

📍 Skywalk Snafu at Surin

The Surin Beach Skywalk is back in the headlines this week, front page of The Phuket News and all.

For those just tuning in, this is the glass-floored “balcony” being built out on the cliffs at Surin. It’s meant to be a scenic lookout spot for tourists, complete with ocean views and a three-story tower.

Who asked for it? No one’s quite sure, apart from the contractor who landed the nearly 200 million baht job. Anyway, the project’s behind schedule and the contract deadline just passed. Now it’s caught in a paperwork spiral while officials in Bangkok decide whether to approve an extension or let the whole thing slide.

Oh, and in case one wasn’t enough: a second skywalk is being planned for Rawai. But they’re waiting to see if this first one ever gets finished before glassing up more cliffs.
