Herbal steam, Nordic sauna, cold plunge - the island exhale you've been putting off.

From the Island 🏝

It's been one of those weeks where the island feels like it's actually dealing with its backlog. Bulldozers on the beach. Police in the kitchens. Interpol at the condo gate. We're not making this up.

Here's what's been happening:

NUI BEACH: 400 officials. 50 buildings. 18 rai of protected coastline handed back to the public. A private operator had been running this beach as a paid-entry enclave for 12 years. Story of the Week.

VISA CLOCK: The Cabinet approved the 60-to-30-day visa exemption cut on July 14. It takes effect 15 days after the Royal Gazette publishes - which could happen any day. If you're on exemptions, read the Visa Corner.

WEED WIPEOUT: 533 cannabis shops across Phuket failed to renew their operating licenses. Province-wide. The green rush era is over.

MONKEY WIN: A local fisherman near Koh Maphrao rescued an exhausted macaque that had swum more than 5km in open sea. The video is doing the rounds and it's exactly what we all needed after a week like this.

All the details, plus deals, events, and dining below. Let's go.

⚑ Quick Island Pulse

🌊 West Coast Beaches - Red Flags Up

Monsoon rip currents are running hard this week. Red flags are legally binding - not suggestions. Two British nationals were pulled out unconscious at Nai Thon earlier this month after ignoring them.

πŸ— Nui Beach (Karon South) - Access Disrupted

Demolition operations are ongoing at Nui Beach through this week. Keep clear of the site. Full public access to the restored beach is expected once the 540-rai recreational zone handover is complete.

🚲 Highway 402 North - EIA Study Underway

A 15-month engineering and environmental study for the Sarasin Bridge gateway expansion started in March. No construction until late 2027 at the earliest - but worth knowing if you're buying or building near the north corridor.

πŸ“… This Weekend

Friday: Maxi Meraki at Cafe del Mar (free, from 10pm) and John O'Conor piano recital at Phuket School of Music (from ΰΈΏ1,000). Sunday: Zoo del Mar pool party at Cafe del Mar, 1-7pm, free. Details in Events below.

⚠️ Consumer Alert - Cannabis Shops

533 Phuket cannabis dispensaries failed license renewal. If you use any, verify their current operating status before visiting. Raids and asset seizures are active across Chalong, Kata, and Patong.

Relax and Rejuvenate at Ton Mai Spa

In a world that rarely slows, Ton Mai Spa feels like the island exhale we all forget we need.

Their herbal steam rooms, Nordic sauna and cold plunge create a rhythm your body instantly responds to. It's a sanctuary where the island finally quiets down and you remember what breathing deeply feels like.

Massages range from Thai and oil to aloe vera, aromatherapy, sports therapy, facials and scrubs - each designed to loosen tension and recalibrate your mood.

If you're feeling adventurous, try a full thermotherapy cycle. Hot, cold, rest. Repeat. You'll walk out lighter, clearer, and just a little more human.

Poolside lounging is encouraged, not optional. And their spa restaurant keeps the wellness glow alive with fresh Thai and Western plates, smoothies, juices and imported teas.

Ton Mai Spa has also been a supporter of Phuket Community since the very beginning. We adore what they do, and we're grateful to have them in our corner.

⭐ Story of the Week

Phuket Cleans House: 50 Illegal Buildings Torn Down at Nui Beach

On Monday, a 400-strong multi-agency task force descended on Nui Beach in Karon. Led personally by Natural Resources Minister Suchart Chomklin, they began demolishing 50 illegal bungalows and commercial structures built on 18 rai of protected national forest land.

A private investor had occupied and commercially exploited this beach for over 12 years - charging ΰΈΏ300 entry, intimidating locals, and reportedly using firearms to keep fishermen away. The total damage to state land is valued at over ΰΈΏ2 billion.

Legal appeals were rejected. Warning periods expired. The bulldozers went in. Once cleared, the 540-rai site will be handed back as publicly accessible recreational forest.

Authorities are calling this the "Phuket Model" - a template for reclaiming over 300 other suspected encroachment sites across the island. The case has also been referred to AMLO for asset seizure and financial audits. Read more via Bangkok Post β†’

What this means for residents

- If you're a property investor or developer: the "Phuket Model" is a direct signal that even long-occupied beachfront land is not safe from reclamation. Get your legal title verified now.

- If you've been blocked from accessing beaches near Karon or Sakhu: the Supreme Court has also ordered demolition of 39 hotel and villa buildings in Sakhu. Access is being restored.

- If you run a business on state-adjacent land: the AMLO referral means financial audits are part of this process, not just physical demolition. Get legal advice if there's any ambiguity on your lease.

Get Your Temporary Work Permit the Day Your E-Permit Is Approved

If you're waiting for a work permit card to arrive, you don't need to sit idle. Since July 1, the Department of Employment issues a Temporary Work Permit the moment your e-Work Permit application is approved electronically - before the physical card is printed.

βœ… Print it immediately. The temporary permit is legally valid proof of work authorization.

βœ… Open your bank account. Thai banks accept it as evidence of legal status for account setup.

βœ… Register with Social Security. No need to wait weeks for the card - you can enroll the same day.

βœ… Get your Tax ID (TIN). Revenue Department accepts the temp permit as identification for TIN registration.

Applies to non-BOI employers. BOI permit holders already had a similar process. If your HR hasn't told you about this, mention it to them. Fragomen briefing β†’

🍝 Out and About

EMMA Modern Greek Restaurant, Cherngtalay

EMMA

Greek meets Italian meets Cote d'Azur, and somehow it works. EMMA is a recently opened lifestyle restaurant on Lagoon Road in the Laguna Village strip - the kind of place you notice the moment someone you trust says "have you been?"

The Marble Tartar is the opener. Slow-cooked beef cheeks in Porto sauce is where the evening earns its price. Greek meze, fresh pasta, and house-baked flatbreads round things out. Budget ΰΈΏ500-1,500 per person, depending on how committed you are to the wine list.

They run an early bird menu daily until 8pm with 15-20% off - genuinely useful for a nicer Tuesday dinner without the occasion markup.

Before: Liberty Cafe (same strip, Lagoon Road) for morning coffee and New York-style breakfast before an afternoon browse.

After: Walk the Laguna Village stretch toward the beachside. Quiet enough at night for a proper wind-down.

βš–οΈ Legal Watch

DBD Order No. 1/2569 (from April 2026) now extends nominee scrutiny to all corporate filings, share transfers, and capital increases - not just new incorporations. Land offices must flag all cash acquisitions over ΰΈΏ2 million for in-depth review.

The three safe ownership paths for foreigners: freehold condo (within 49% project quota), registered 30-year leasehold, or usufruct/superficies registered at the Land Office. Everything else carries escalating risk right now.

A lot happened this week. Beaches reclaimed, laws tightened, and a fisherman who pulled a very confused macaque out of the Andaman Sea. That's the island. It gives you all of it at once.

If the visa news has you thinking, use this weekend to actually make a plan - not just a worry. The next edition drops Friday, 31 July. Sabai sabai, see you then. 🌞
